A friend of mine, Sunny HIlden, is a Grammy-winning songwriter and vocal coach. She said something to me one day that I’ll never forget. I was in a session trying to hard to emulate one of my favorite singers, and I was frustrated that I wasn’t capturing his sound. Sunny looked at me and said “This is a Dom Liberati song. Why don’t you try to sing like you?! You are the ONLY one on this planet with YOUR voice. Use it.”
Isn’t that an awesome sentiment? We so often get so caught up with someone in the spotlight and try to mimic them. The truth is, they only got in the spotlight because they had some unique and genuine quality about them that nobody else had. Whether it’s your voice or some other attribute, there is no other YOU on this planet. How do you rise above? By embracing who YOU are.
You are the only YOU on this Earth. Being authentic is the only way to leave a mark. Don’t be the next anything, be the FIRST YOU.
